Sewells’ Franchise Networks is a unique annual report on the structure and sales performance of the UK’s franchised dealer networks. It aims to provide industry leaders with a wide-ranging view of recent industry trends and key factors that drive the UK motor industry.

The report brings together essential data and market intelligence from authoritative sources, some already published and some newly researched for this report.

The report also includes:

A review of dealer groups’ influence on UK new car retailing
A review of the top AM100 dealer groups’ performance and profitability
UK new car registrations and trends
Used car volumes, values and trends in the UK used car market
An overview of European new car volumes and trends

This year’s Franchise Networks report shows the number of UK franchised dealer sales outlets continued to fall in 2008, by 196 to 5,077 points compared with 5,273 at the end of 2006 – a drop of 1,062 sites over the past 10 years.

The report also shows dealer groups are retaining their firm hold on new car retailing. There are 469 dealer groups in the UK operating 3.814 franchised points, accounting for three quarters of the .country’s new car sales outlets.

UK new car sales fell by 11.3% and 272,212 units to 2,131,795 in 2007 – 447,255 less than the all-time high of 2.579 million reached in 2003. Registrations in the final quarter of 2008 were down 27.2% on the previous year, the steepest fall of any quarter.

While UK used car volumes fell by 384,000 units to 7.1 million in 2007 due to weaker sales in the 0-2 year and 3-5 year age groups, the used car market value held firm at £33.3 billion.

We are grateful to the vehicle manufacturers and importers who provided network size and model sales data to help us compile Sewells’ Franchise Networks 2009.

UK market share and registrations statistics are from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), while European data is from the Association des Constructeurs Européens d’Automobile (ACEA).
